Overview of Projects Undertaken

  • Project Details: This project is in R0 phase, with proposed point of connection maximum active power of 250 MW. The project consist of (latest/innovative) grid forming inverters provided by SMA. The project will be providing the desired support to maximize renewable generation in the nearby area and also providing the technology to reduce the peak demand generation.

Project Status: R0 studies in progress.

VAPL role: VAPL team is performing the R0 studies required for the assessment of BESS performance against the National Electricity Rules. We are doing the control system tuning using PSCAD model to get the desired performance which is acceptable to the network service provider. Our team has been coordinating with the OEM to provide the most optimal performance utilizing the grid forming control features so as to meet the existing rules requirement as well as the performance that supports the grid stability and security.

  • Project Details: This project is in R0 phase, with proposed point of connection maximum active power of 475 MW. The project is a hybrid project of SF and BESS component. While BESS will be using Grid Forming technology, the network fault levels at the point of connection is very low and hence this project presents complex challenges to meet the NER requirement while solving the technical issues associated with the low SCR connection point.

Project Status: R0 studies in progress.

VAPL role: VAPL team is performing the R0 studies required for the assessment of BESS and SF performance against the National Electricity Rules. In the initial phase of the project, assessment is performed to ascertain the maximum power transfer capability of the external grid and providing technical solutions to maximize the power transfer limits. We will be performing the studies in PSCAD and PSSE software to tune the plant performance and also demonstrate that the BESS can operate at a very low network system strength.

  • Project Details: This project is already commissioned and fully operational. It is a 125 MW solar farm connecting 275kV PowerLink transmission network in Queensland. It consists of Power Electronics inverter. The project has completed the R2 testing phase and is fully operational while some of the issues identified in testing are being resolved.

Project Status: R2 testing in progress.

VAPL role: VAPL team supported the Client by leading the R2 testing performed on site and also supporting in resolving various technical issues identified on site during the testing period. VAPL also supported the Client in discussions and negotiations with NSP and AEMO for the plant performance and deciding the next steps for the project.

  • Project Details: Various projects which have completed the R0 phase and are ready to be awarded to the EPC contractor for registration and R1 studies followed by R2 testing.

Project Status: Risk assessment completed for several projects.

VAPL role: VAPL reviews the GPS packages submitted and approved during R0 phase and provide a detailed risk assessment report which identifies and shortcomings of the R0 studies and the registration risks for the GPS studies during R1 stage. The risk assessment also involves a factor of expected testing limitations and any operational difficulties which may be encountered based on the R0 studies and GPS commitment.

  • Project Details: The project is a 5 MW BESS project connected to distribution network in Victoria, Australia. Technical assessment was required to ascertain that the BESS can be dispatched in various network conditions including substantial roof top solar generation causing the reverse power flow into the distribution system.

    Project Status: Operational.

VAPL role: VAPL completed the distribution system analysis in SINCAL software as the base distribution network model was available in SINCAL. We performed various network configuration and dispatch scenarios to estimate the impact of BESS dispatch on the network voltages and ensuring that the BESS operation does not cause any negative impact to the other customers connected to the same distribution network.
